Oral Massage

We have been doing Beckman massages for Eli to help with his oral motor development. Noahsdad.com has an awesome video you should check out as well, using the z-vibe.

This is so so important for our kiddos. It feels passive in a lot of ways but it helps create muscle memory and expand the soft palette. This aides in tongue placement, feeding, strengthening, and speech.
We do these massages between 2-3 times a day. We’ve also added a new toy since this video similar to the z-vibe. It’s a vibrating teething star. It is the only toy that elicits the “munch” or chew reflex- he loves chewing on it and it didn’t take him long to figure out how to make it vibrate. We use the star after each massage.
Any time Eli begins to chew or suck on his tongue or hands we pull out his “wiggle star” or we do our Beckman massages. Love that he loves it. 🙂

  1. Would love to learn more about the oral massages…do you know if there are any good online videos to learn how to do some at home? My DD is 3 months old and would love to start some of these with her. Thank you for posting your video too….very helpful and looks like he really likes it!

    1. Thanks! I’m so glad we could help! I honestly haven’t searched for more videos- probably should do that! I bought a speech book but none of it seems to apply to Eli right now. Not to mention ECI won’t even see him for ST until he’s older. 😦
From everything that I’ve read, this is the best place to start. A wonderful site that has awesome resources is thespeechmama.com. Her info is wonderful!! We found talk tools through them, began the oral massages and are working on chewing right now.
I’d say start there and do it early so your dd will become more comfortable with it. As I find more resources I will post them. (if you see anything new totally let me know! Hehe I’m still learning too!)
